INTERVIEW! Deirdre O'Kane and Peter McDonald: 'We felt very protective over all the kids on Moone Boy set'

Moone Boy stars Deirdre O’Kane and Peter McDonald have revealed that they are very protective of the shows young actors, David Rawle and Ian O’Reilly.

The stars of the hit Sky series have become like a family when the camera is off in their years filming together and the actors told Goss.ie that they always checked to make sure the kids were handling the pressure of filming ok.

“We do feel protective of them. They all have their own parents around set since they were little, but we do mind them,” Deirdre said.

“I wouldn’t say I was parental but I would certainly look out for them on set, like if I thought there was something they were worried about.”

“They’re such smart, witty guys. You’re not going ‘Oh I have to spend the day with a kid’, you have a really good laugh with them,” Peter added.

Deirdre and Peter also agreed that Moone Boy creator Chris O’Dowd has a “touch of genius” about him.

“Chris is such a massive force, he’s a huge presence, he’s brilliant,” they said.

“He has a real nose for comedy and when something is working. Something could be going quite well and he’ll say if you say that line differently and then it works even better. He has a touch of genius.”

However, Deirdre admitted that all of the cast have yet to meet Chris’ baby son Art.

“No we haven’t met him, but he’s only just out, he’s fresh out of the oven that child,” she laughed.

The stand-up comedian also revealed that her role as matriarch Debra in the series reminds her of her own family as a kid.

“Well I am 1 of 5 so the Moone family reminds me a great deal of my own family. There was seven in my house and it was permanent chaos and a lot of shouting.”

Meanwhile, Peter told Goss.ie he thinks Moone Boy has done a fantastic job of being relatable to modern day Irish kids, despite being set in the 80s and 90s.

“Irish kids relate so much to the programme, they don’t feel like they’re watching a history lesson or a period piece, this generation are watching it and loving it.”
