Gay Byrne reveals IRA threatened to kill him with a hand grenade

Gay Byrne has revealed how he was sent death threats by the IRA – but was never scared.

The ex-Late Late Show host admits he believes this is part of being in the public eye, and feels TV stars shouldn’t complain about their stalkers.

He said: “I used to get abusive letters all the time. Everybody in the business gets abusive mail, and when you get your first abusive letter you go around with it in your pocket.

“You think everybody you meet knows about it, and you can’t keep it a secret… I was certainly threatened by IRA people, many, many times.

“They would say, ‘We have hand grenades left over, and we know where you live and we know where your daughters go to school’.

“But I always worked on the basis that people who are going to kill you don’t write to you beforehand, they just do it.”

Stalked: Sharon Ni Bheolain was left terrified

And the 79-year-old said other stars like Sharon Ni Bheolain should accept stalkers and abuse is part of being in the public eye.

He told the Irish Sun: “No matter who you are in the public eye, whether a politician or a footballer or a TV host, you are going to get rude letters.

“If you don’t want to get that kind of mail, go back to the shop, or the office or the warehouse where you came from, and stay anonymous and private, in other words stay out of the pubic eye.”
