Gay Byrne opens up on receiving death threats and not getting paid enough by RTE

Gay Byrne has revealed that he received a number of death threats when he worked on The Late Late Show.

The 82-year-old presenter was regularly targeted but insists that he never took any of the threats seriously as if someone really wanted him dead, he doubts they would warn him first.

“There were threats on my life,” he told the Sunday Independent. “They came in the form of letters saying ‘we’ll blow you asunder or set fire to your house’. They were never anything I took seriously, mind. I believe that if someone genuinely intended to kill you, he wouldn’t actually write to you to alert you that this was going to happen.”

Gay presented The Late Late Show for 37 years but believes he wasn’t adequately compensated for most of that run.

“Absolutely not,” he said, when asked if he was paid enough. “For 23 years I was on a three-month contract. We were printing money.”

Gay had a heart attack earlier this year and despite having a stent put in, he has no plans to retire completely, believing that his work on Lyric FM and the RTE Meaning of Life series, keeps him fit and healthy.
