Fair City's Michael Sheehan makes his return to TV after painful injury DESTROYED his boxing career

Fair City actor Michael Sheehan has revealed his dreams of becoming a boxer have been ruined.

The RTE star is returning to Carrigstown tonight as Leo’s adventurous son Dean Dowling and it seems to be a case of art imitating life with Dean now a bare-knuckle fighter.

“I’m absolutely delighted to be back,” he admitted.

“They told me in November I would be returning and I was living in the UK at the time. So I moved home and I am over the moon to be back,” he said.

“When I left I had a notion – I realised I was getting closer to 30 and I always had a big interest in fighting, boxing mostly, and I wanted to pursue that for a little bit.”

“But within two weeks of leaving I had a bad injury to my knee and that put paid to it. It was maybe my body was telling me it was not to be,” he added.

However, Michael has not completely given up on fitness and revealed that he used to train in the same gym as Irish Mixed Martial Arts fighters.

“I was doing MMA in SBG [Straight Blast Gym Ireland] before I left Ireland and my first cousin Peter is a pro fighter who trains in the same gym as I used to train with Conor McGregor and Cathal Pendred.”

Meanwhile, Michael has revealed he is happy to return to Fair City after keeping his acting career going with a few gigs while he was living in London.

“I did a couple of episodes of Ripper Street and a couple of films with Nick Moran who was in Lock Stock And Two Smoking Barrels. But I made the move home when I heard about Fair City as you do miss it.”

Michael added he’s delighted to have returned to the soap but he reckons his mum is even more ecstatic.

“She is the biggest Fair City fan in the country and is as happy – if not happier – than I am that Dean is back.”
