EXCLUSIVE! Bressie: Why making Limerick teens into a band was the 'hardest thing' I've ever done

Bressie has revealed mentoring Limerick teens for his new RTE show Teenage Kicks was the “hardest thing” he’d ever done.

The Voice star works with a group from some of the city’s toughest estates to put a band together – in a bid to prove they aren’t as down and out and people believe.

He said: “I was dealing with teenagers under the age of 18, there was egos, emotions, lots of different things.”

And Bressie told Goss.ie that he found it so tough and such an “eye opener” – as he tried just to be able to relate to those he was working with.

Helping: Bressie is taking on Limerick

“I didn’t want to pretend I understood what they’d been through. I said to them straight away that I couldn’t relate to them,” he said.

“It was the hardest thing I’ve ever done. I learned an awful lot from them. We have no idea what goes on.

“We have this quiet little bubble that we live in, but some of these kids have it seriously tough, things I will never understand.

“In terms of television and music there was just so many people involved and they all have stories. It was such an eye opener.

“Music is a part of the show but it certainly isn’t the core of it. Some very special things happened during filming.

So different: Bressie in his usual Voice role

“I didn’t want to be accused of creating something and walking away, leaving nothing. We’ve given them the tools to be a band and give them all the resources they need.”

However Bressie told Goss.ie that he won’t return for a second series of the show – which was nothing like The Voice.

He added: “No I don’t think I should. I want to pass it on, I think someone else should do it. Someone else might have an entirely different way of approaching it.

“Musically I have no idea how it will turn out but I really think we have done something. I’m proud of it.”
