Eoghan McDermott: 'Voice pals told me they also suffered from depression'

TV star Eoghan McDermott has told how Voice co-stars, models and RTE colleagues have told him they also suffered from depression.

The Voice presenter revealed they came up to him after posting an honest YouTube video last week, where he admitted to self-harming after a break-up left him depressed.

He said: “That was only 10 days ago, but since that happened I had three people who are involved in The Voice – I won’t say cast, crew, or whatever – who individually separately quietly came up to me and said, ‘Thank you for doing that’.

“They said they had been in a similar scenario. I had a member of my own wider family I didn’t know was battling depression and that was brought to my attention.

“I had a lady who works in RTE – who I don’t know but just got my email from in-house – and wrote to me and said to me, ‘I’ve got a niece who’s in a horribly dark place and we showed her your video and it lead to us talking about stuff’.

“I had this model, who I don’t know personally but people on the social scene know her from being in the papers, who wrote to me and said, ‘I’ve had a horrific time, I saw your video, thank you.'”

Speaking on the Saturday Night Show, Eoghan added that he feels everyone knows someone who is depressed in someway – and believes we need to be more open to talking about our mental health.
