Aidan Gillen on RTE drama Charlie: 'I didn't want to make it unless we were SURE'

Actor Aidan Gillen has said he never would have signed up to star in RTE series Charlie, if he didn’t really believe in the project.

The Love/Hate star plays the lead role of Charles Haughey in the new trilogy, and revealed he only took the role because he was sure the series would be a success.

“I didn’t want to take it on unless we were sure that we were going to get away with it,” he said.

“It wasn’t my intention to do an impersonation because you can do that really well, but that’d be too much.

“This drama is not about being judgmental. It’s about exciting times in the life of our State and the emergence of a modern Ireland, with Haughey at the forefront,” he added.

Speaking to the Sunday Independent Aidan insisted that the script for the show is very well written, despite mixed reviews from viewers last weekend.

Well-written: Aidan said he loved the script | RTE

“It is a well-written script by Colin Teevan and it has a Shakespearean narrative,” he explained.

“It’s all about power. It’s about how a brilliant political mind gets sidetracked and how this powerful man ends up isolated.”
