Xposé’s Ruth O’Neill: ‘People look better on TV when they’re slimmer’

Ruth O’Neill has opened up about the pressures of appearing on TV everyday, referencing the age old saying of “the camera adds 10 pounds”.

The 28-year-old is a co-host on TV3’s Xpose, and admitted that the judgement that follows being on camera every day does get to her – especially when the camera isn’t very forgiving.

“When you meet people in real life, they’re always so much slimmer than they are on TV. It’s just not forgiving if you’re having a bad hair day or if you’ve had make-up on since early in the morning,” she told the Herald.

“People are so critical, and that includes me. People do look better on TV when they’re a little bit slimmer.

“Anyone who’s on TV knows it’s weird looking at yourself. The camera isn’t forgiving. That’s the industry we’re in – it’s very judgmental and critical,” she said.

“I’m working out less than I ever have. I don’t have as much time to work out because we’re running around so much. The weight falls off you in this job as well, it’s crazy,” she said.

The entertainment programme was given access to the infamous Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Paris this year, and Ruth, who used to work for E! Entertainment in the US, told how it was her contacts in New York that eventually got them to the show.

“I got us all the access through contacts. Xpose has never covered Victoria’s Secret. When I joined Xpose that was my goal.

“It was absolute madness. We got to speak to some of the new angels like Stella Maxwell and Taylor Hill. You only get allocated 20 minutes backstage. A PR escort brings you around and each model has a PR person too.

“They were all really nice, the Angels, they were lovely. I’m obsessed with them. Their skin and their hair, everything is so perfect,” she added.
