What a hero: Damien Dempsey saved a drowning teen's life by towing him in from sea

Musician Damien Dempsey saved a drowning teenager’s life over the weekend – by towing him in from sea.

The Dublin star came upon a man struggling to stay above water in the River Slaney in Co Wexford, and calmly went to save his life.

Witness Mark Ronan said he was “amazed” by his heroism, especially as he “didn’t look for pats on the back from anyone” afterwards.

And the retired fire service told South East Radio that locals have called him a hero after saving the lad straight after playing a show at the Strawberry Fest in Enniscorthy.

“I walked over towards the railing by the river and one guy did seem to be going under and coming up, and at one time it was level enough – he could stand in it,” he said.

“Then he was going under and the other guy was trying to pull him. But it was quite noticable that one of them couldn’t swim and the other guy couldn’t swim a whole lot.

“There didn’t seem to be much of a panic. And my years of doing what I’ve been doing, I didn’t know anyone around but I said, ‘Can anyone swim? This is a situation that’s developing into something worse’.

“And everyone was looking and then this guy walked up, who I kind of recognised, with what looked like a blanket or sheet in his hands.

“He was very cool, he took off his shoes, climbed down the embankment to where the guy was, handed him part of this blanket or sheet and towed him in with it.

“The fella who had to be brought in was a bit sheepish looking, and Damien Dempsey who I now realised it was, came out of the water, got his shoes, cool as you like, walked off with the water dripping off”.

He added that the other boy managed to make his own way back, after Damien aided the drowning one.
