TV3’s Alan Hughes joins the cast of TG4’s Ros na Rún for special episode

TG4’s Ros na Rún welcomed TV3 Ireland AM presenter Alan Hughes to Connemara last Friday to make his debut on Ireland’s flagship Irish language soap opera.

Alan’s Gaeilge was put to the test as part of Seachtain na Gaeilge, as he filmed a special cameo appearance in Ros na Rún’s landmark Tigh Thaidhg’s pub alongside one of the soap’s most famous faces, roguish publican Tadhg Ó Direáin.

The cameo will preview on TV3’s Ireland AM during Seachtain na Gaeilge in March before its release on TG4 in May.

The actor’s cameo scene will feature some of Ros na Rún’s best-loved characters Mo, Colm, David and Gráinne.

Alan toured the set and met with the 160 cast and crew members, taking in Ros na Rún’s most recognised locations before meeting with one of Seachtain na Gaeilge 2017’s official ambassadors, TG4 presenter Micheál Ó Ciaraidh for an interview on set.

Speaking about the experience, Alan said: “I was thrilled to make my soap opera debut on Ros na Rún. I never thought I’d be speaking Irish on TV! It was a real challenge to learn a cúpla focal Gaeilge but everyone was so helpful. I had great fun meeting the cast and filming in Ros na Rún’s iconic Tigh Thaidhg’s pub.”

Alan’s cameo follows a number of star-studded appearances over the years on Ros na Rún including country star Nathan Carter and legendary actor Stephen Fry.

Ros na Rún’s series producer Deirdre Ní Fhlatharta said: “It was a pleasure to have Alan Hughes and TV3’s Ireland AM on set. We had great fun filming the scene and teaching Alan his cúpla focal. It’s a great incentive to encourage people to brush up on their Gaeilge for Seachtain na Gaeilge!”
