Sinead O'Connor re-ignites political campaign: 'The North and South need to reunite'

Sinead O’Connor has revealed she wants Ireland and Northern Ireland to be reunited into a new country – with a brand new name.

The Nothing Compares 2 U singer admitted she thinks the only way Ireland will be able to solve its problems is if the two states form to create a new nation.

“We can’t have sovereignty until we’re one country on paper. It’s been a sin to even discuss it,” she said.

“I think it would be great if it wasn’t Ireland or Northern Ireland. If it had a new name, if it was a new country altogether.”

Speaking to Brendan O’Connor on The John Murray Show on RTE Radio 1, Sinead said we need to move on from our past.

“What I’d love is us and the North to talk about the fact that we might unify the country.

“I would like them to start talking about it so we can fix it quickly,” she explained.

“I think we should dissociate from the past, all the wars, all of this b******t. We need a revolution and we need to take ownership of our country. The government is not going to do that.”

However, when asked how the country should go about starting a revolution, Sinead was stumped.

“I don’t know, I’m not a planner of revolutions,” she replied.

Meanwhile, the Bray native also admitted that Sinn Fein thinks she’s out of her mind.

“I went to Sinn Fein with the idea to see how they would strategize the revolution,” she said.

“An idea sometimes takes a while to sink in. I think, if I’m genuine, their feeling is that I’m out of my mind, which of course I’m not.”

“There are people so broke they can’t afford to pay for water which means they can’t afford to pay for food.”

“Why do we have to wait for everyone in the North to get their act together before we can discuss sovereignty.”
