She's clucking amazing: Pauline McLynn spending Christmas knitting jumpers for saved battery hens

You’ll never guess what Father Ted star Pauline McLynn will be spending her Christmas doing – knitting jumpers for hens.

The Eastenders actress, 52, has been creating the body-warmers for chicks who have been saved from battery farms and being killed for food.

She has created the little jerseys, which come with gaps for their wings, to help the rescued hens survive outside the hot cramped battery factory.

The TV star – known for playing tea-loving Mrs Doyle – has been working with Littlehill Animal Rescue in Kildare.

Recently, the Sligo-born actress became patron of the Kildare charity.

Beloved Pauline is a massive fan of knitting, and outside of her acting roles makes her own ‘A Go On!’ tea cosies for sale.

Next month, it is trying to survive 4,000 young laying hens set to be slaughtered.

A spokesperson said: “They have lived in dark, desolate, barren cages for just over a year now.

“They have never seen the outside world, felt the sun on their back or any kindness.

“We are racing against the slaughterhouse truck which will arrive early December if we do not get them out first.”
