Saoirse Ronan’s actor father is joining the cast of Fair City, it has been revealed.

Paul Ronan, who has previously starred in The Tudors, Ballykissangel, and most recently Striking Out, has landed a new role in the RTÉ soap.

According to the Irish Sun, the 52-year-old will play Anto Collins, the father of sisters Hayley and Harmony, who are played by Rebecca Grimes and Eleanor O’Brien.

Meanwhile, actress Neili Conroy, who has previously appeared in The Clinic and Love/Hate, will star as Anto’s wife Sharon.

Saoirse’s dad has already filmed his first scenes in Carrigstown, and he’s expected to become a permanent fixture on the show.

A show insider said, “The Collins family are set to make quite a stir. They certainly not The Waltons so viewers can expect to see lots of drama as Sharon and Anto join Hayley and Harmony.”

Around the time Paul will make his first appearance on Fair City, Saoirse will be walking the red carpet at this year’s Academy Awards – as she’s been nominated in the Best Actress category for her role in Lady Bird.

This is Saoirse’s third nomination, as she was previously nominated in the Best Supporting Actress category for her role in Atonement back in 2007, and received a Best Actress nod in 2015 for her role in Brooklyn.
