Ryan Tubridy has congratulated Claire Byrne on her RTÉ Radio 1 slot, after she was announced as Sean O’Rourke’s official replacement.

On Wednesday, RTÉ confirmed Claire as the new host of the station’s popular Today programme – taking over from Sarah McInerney, who temporarily presented the show after Sean retired in May.

Speaking on his own show today, Ryan said: “All the papers have been covering Claire Byrne’s recent announcement that she’s going to take over from Sarah McInerney, obviously who’s there now and before that of course, Sean O’Rourke.”

“I just wanted to say congratulations to Claire, she’s a wonderful colleague, extraordinarily talented person, brilliant at her job and a very welcome addition to the schedule here in RTE.”

“I’m really really happy that she’s here and she’s so welcome,” he gushed.

Addressing some people’s disappointment over Sarah losing out on the permanent role, Ryan said: “Equally and I mean this, Sarah McInerney has been so excellent in the mornings too that we are spoilt for choice here and blessed to have that choice.”

“I have no doubt Sarah will find a home on the schedule in due course and I look forward to that happening.”

“But to them both congratulations and great to have you on the team. It really really is wonderful news,” he added.
