Ruth Negga responds to Samuel L Jackson’s comments about black British actors being ‘cheaper’

Ruth Negga has responded to Samuel L Jackon’s comments about black British actors being cast as Americans because they’re “cheaper”.

The actor made the controversial comments during an interview on Hot 97 back in March, and said, “They’re cheaper than us for a start. And [directors] think they’re better than us because they’re classically trained.”

Samuel made the statement when speaking about the casting of British actor Daniel Kaluuya in Get Out.

However, Irish-Ethiopian actress Ruth Negga, who earned Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for her role as American character Mildred Loving this year, has since hit back at Samuel’s comments.

“I really don’t think someone like [Loving director] Jeff Nichols would employ me just because I’m cheaper than someone else.

“He’s an artist and I think he would want the best person for the job, that’s the bottom line,” she told The Telegraph.

The former Love/Hate star also disagreed with Samuel’s understanding that only African Americans can understand what it’s like to be black in America.

“It defeats the point of being an actor and the joy of seeing someone slip into another person’s skin,” she added.
