Ruth Negga lands on the cover of the Hollywood Reporter

Ruth Negga has landed on the cover of the Hollywood Reporter.

The actress, who was born in Ethiopia and raised by her Irish mother in Co. Limerick, is currently promoting her new movie Loving – which she stars in alongside Joel Edgerton.

The movie, which has already been tipped for Oscar success, is based on the true story of Mildred Jeter and Richard Loving, an interracial couple who were arrested in 1958 for marrying.

Loving has already been credited for highlighting real life issues in modern society, which is something Ruth is incredibly passionate about.

“[There was an] anthropological study where they noticed that when [people were being filmed], all the white people very confidently walked down the street and all the black people moved out of the way,” she told the Hollywood Reporter.

“Unless you’re walking around with an invisibility cloak, [you can’t fail to be aware of racism]. It’s only ever going to change when people have conversations and don’t dismiss the Black Lives Matter movement as something that’s aggressive or unnecessary.”

British actor Colin Firth acted as a producer for Loving, and told how the film, aside from race, focuses on universal elements – like love.

“What this film does is make what could seem like a political conversation into a very, very personal one,” Colin said.

“One of the things that really struck me was that law enforcement went into their bedroom — they went into the bedroom. The bedroom to me is so emblematic of intimacy and privacy and the no-go area.”
