RTÉ staff back Sharon Ní Bheoláin in gender pay gap argument

RTÉ staff are backing Sharon Ní Bheoláin in the gender pay gap argument.

Education correspondent Emma O’Kelly and political correspondent Martina Fitzgerald have now joined news anchor Sharon Ní Bheoláin in calling for more transparency surrounding pay.

Recently, the BBC published a list of current salaries in order to establish the scale of the pay difference between its male and female workers.

It was revealed yesterday by The Sunday Independent that Sharon earns €60,000 – €80,000 less than her co-anchor Bryan Dobson.

Transparency: Emma O’Kelly is calling for more transparency in the salaries of RTÉ’s staff | RTÉ

Emma O’Kelly spoke to the Irish Independent and called for more transparency in the salaries of RTÉ’s staff.

“As chair of the broadcasting committee in RTÉ and as a correspondent, of course I would like to see the details in relation to the potential gender pay gap published.

“I just covered the issue of gender pay in relation to the higher education sector. Universities have done it, so should RTÉ. This is information that should be published.”

Unity: Martina Fitzgerald agrees that all companies should publish pay details | RTÉ

Political correspondent Martina Fitzgerald also said she agrees that all companies should publish pay details.

“No organisation or public body should be excluded. RTÉ is a progressive employer and therefore, in the interests of transparency, it should make this information available.”

In a statement last night, a spokesperson for RTÉ said, “RTÉ salaries and fees take into account a wide range of factors including levels of experience, length of service and range of duties or programming a person is involved in.

“RTÉ does not comment on individual staff salaries.”
