RTÉ Sport Awards Sportsperson of the Year nominees announced

The nominees for the RTÉ Sport Awards Sportsperson of the Year were announced on RTÉ Radio 1’s Morning Ireland today.

The nominees list, which includes Cork camogie captain Rena Buckley, Irish soccer star James McLean, Galway hurler Joe Canning and Munster scrumhalf Conor Murray, was announced this morning and voting is open to the public until Wednesday 13th December at 5.00pm.

The public can vote either online at rte.ie/sport or by text.

Darragh Maloney and Joanne Cantwell will host the Awards show on RTÉ One at 9.15pm on Saturday 16 December.

Nominees and voting details for both the Team of the Year and Manager of the Year awards plus a new category for 2017 Young Sportsperson of the Year will be announced later.

Here’s the list of Nominees:

1)    Rena Buckley

Rena made history this year when she won her 18th All Ireland medal and captained the Cork camogie team to their 27th All-Ireland win.

2)    Ryan Burnett

Ryan, who won the the IBF title in June 2017  added the WBA (Super) title to his belt back in October. He is now the bantamweight world champion.

3)    Joe Canning

The Portumna man was one of the key influence’s on the Galway  team that overcame a tough Waterford side in this years All Ireland Hurling Final.

4)    Katie-George Dunlevy and Eve McCrystal

The duo won two gold medals at the UCI 2017 Para-cycling Road World Championships in South Africa. The par won the WB Tandem Road Race and the WB Tandem Time Trial.

5)    Noelle Healy

Dublin GAA star, Noelle Healy was named Player of the Match in Dublin’s Ladies All-Ireland senior final where they overcame a very skillful Mayo side.

6)    James McClean

Footballer For West Brom & the Republic of Ireland’s, he played a major part in the team’s World Cup qualifying campaign.

7)    Michael McKillop

Michael picked up his ninth World Championship gold medal when he won the T37 1500m at the Para Athletics World Championships in London this year.

8)    Andy Moran

Andy was an inspirational figure and major driving force behind the Mayo team in their All Ireland campaign this year losing out a strong Dublin side in the final.

9)    Conor Murray

Conor had an impressive Lions tour becoming the first northern hemisphere player ever to have scored four career tries in tests against the All Blacks.

10) Paul O’Donovan

Paul won gold at the lightweight men’s single sculls at the World Rowing Championships in Florida this year.

11) Robbie Power 

The Meath jockey won the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Punchestown Gold Cup on Sizing John as well as the Irish Grand National on Our Duke.

12) Jason Smyth

The Derry sprinter won double gold at the Para Athletics World Championships in London. Jason won the T13 100m and T13 200m.

13) Katie Taylor

The Bray boxing native became World Champion this year winning the vacant WBA female lightweight title in Cardiff in October.

14) Joe Ward

The Westmeath boxer won silver at the World Boxing Championships in Hamburg.
