RTE cut short John Legend Oscar Performance and are labelled 'RACIST' by angry viewers

Viewers have labelled RTE “racist” after the station cut short a performance by John Legend and Common from its Oscars coverage.

The US star sang Glory from the acclaimed civil rights drama Selma – which later won Best Original Song.

The performance, which was hailed as the highlight of the awards show by many, was cut halfway through for an ad break on RTE.

Viewers of the 87th Academy Awards expressed their outrage on Twitter and accused the broadcaster of racism.

“RTE John Legend just highlighted the fact that racism is still as prevalent today as it was 50 years ago. Absolutely disgraced for ye lads,” one user wrote online.

“RTE why did you cut out John Legend? Is it a racist issue here? What am I missing?” another asked.

Meanwhile, many viewers questioned why RTE had chosen to broadcast in full an earlier performance by singer Adam Levine but not John’s performance even though his track  won Best Original Song.

RTE have received 15 formal complaints over their Oscar coverage however the station claims the mishap was due to a broadcast error.

“RTE acquires a 90-minute international version of the Oscars which is cut and edited by the Oscars themselves,” a spokeswoman said.

“However due to a broadcast error there was a disruption to the John Legend performance for which we sincerely apologise.”

“The full version of John Legend’s performance is available to view on the RTE Player.”

This years Oscars have faced considerable controversy after it was revealed not a single black actor  was up for an award.

Host Neil Patrick Harris referenced this in his opening monologue.

“Today we honour Hollywood’s best and whitest, sorry brightest,” he joked.

John Legend is set to play the Marquee in Cork on June 23.
