Roy Keane shares brilliant reaction to becoming a grandfather for the third time

Roy Keane has become a grandfather for the third time.

The former Manchester United ace shared the happy news via Instagram, posting photos of him proudly holding his newborn grandchild.

The 53-year-old captioned the post: “My new grandson, big baby ❤️🇮🇪.”

Roy’s caption referenced one of his most famous quotes from over the years.

Two years ago, the Cork native branded Liverpool’s Andy Robertson a “big baby” on live television.

Speaking in the Sky Sports studio after a Premier League match between Liverpool and Arsenal, Roy said: “I said at half time: ‘Robertson, what a baby. What a big baby. Just get on with the game. Baby.’”

In the comments section, fans also referenced an interview Roy did about a decade ago, when he was asked about Robbie Keane’s availability.

Confused, Roy replied, “Why wouldn’t he be?”

After learning that Robbie’s wife just had a baby, he added: “Yeah, but he didn’t have a baby, did he? Unless he’s breastfeeding, he should be alright.”

Roy and his wife of 28 years, Theresa Doyle, share five children together – Leah, Caragh, Aidan, Shannon and Alanna – and are now the proud grandparents of three grandchildren.

Earlier this month, Roy won praise from a family in Cork, after he visited their sick father in hospital.

The former Manchester United player showed up to Mercy Hospital Cork unannounced, after the family issued a public plea on Cork’s Red FM for Roy to film a video message for their beloved dad Pat O’Sullivan.

Pat is a longtime fan of Roy, and his family sweetly revealed that he’s his “idol”.

Pat’s son Rob had contacted the radio station, hoping to get a video message from Roy as a result.

His plea managed to reach Roy somehow, and he took it upon himself to fly over and visit Pat in the flesh.

Speaking on Red FM Breakfast with KC, Rob O’Sullivan said: “Roy didn’t just send a message, he showed up in person, no fuss, no fanfare.

“Dad’s been through so much, and to see his idol walk through that door was unbelievable. Roy stayed for ages, talking to him like they were old friends. It’s a moment we’ll never forget.”

Pat’s face “lit up like never before” as Roy sat with him in his hospital room.

Rob continued: “I don’t know what I was ever expecting out of it, and that’s being honest.

“But for him to come and visit, take time out of his schedule, to see my dad and go back and forth trading stories. You have absolutely no idea (how much that meant). It still feels like a dream.

“When I looked at him, I was in awe. I couldn’t believe he was right in front of me and about to make my dad’s dream come true.

“My dad cried twice,” Rob added. “He fully understood Roy was there.

“Since I last spoke to you guys, my dad’s speech has actually gone really bad. So the timing was perfect since he and Roy could actually have a bit of a conversation.

“My dad looked at him, stared at him and just couldn’t believe his hero was there sat next to him.”

Listeners were moved by Roy’s incredible act of kindness, and took to the comment section to praise him.

Under a clip of Rob’s radio interview on Instagram, one listener wrote, “That’s what you call a true Irish hero.”

Another commented, “Roy has been doing stuff like that for years and never looks for any praise or publicity for it.”

A third person wrote: “He did the same with my uncle when he was in Marymount Hospice wwhen he was in his final days with MND. My uncle was naturally delighted. Roy is proper gentleman and these sort of interactions should be highlighted more.”
