Rosanna Davison embroiled in controversy over comments about 'arthritis, autism and schizophrenia'

Rosanna Davison is facing major backlash online after suggesting in a newspaper column that gluten food is “responsible for a huge range of medical conditions from autism spectrum disorders to schizophrenia to arthritis.”

The former Miss World insisted that her husband Wesley Quirke has seen pain from “rheumatoid arthritis in his knuckles and knees” leave him after going gluten-free.

“There is no evidence to suggest that the serious auto-immune disease of #RA can be managed through a gluten free diet,” Arthritis Ireland tweeted on Monday.

Ahead of the launch of her new book Eat Yourself Beautiful which comes out next week, the Irish model divulged that she was suffering from “chronic breakouts” on her skin because of gluten.

“I’d be picking at the breadbasket, or eating sandwiches, and my skin would be inflamed and sore,” she said.

“For someone else, a gluten intolerance could manifest itself in their joints or muscles, but for me everything shows in my skin first,” she wrote in The Irish Independent.

“Anyway, I stopped eating wheat and within a week or two it had all calmed down.”

“Ever since, I have avoided wheat and gluten, and the odd time I would have a bit of bread my stomach would get crampy and bloated.”

Rosanna’s comments caused the 31-year-old to trend on Twitter nationwide with many social media users bashing the blonde.

“I have Asperger’s, can I make a personal appeal to @rosanna_davison ? Please stop saying gluten causes autism. It’s wrong and offensive,” a user wrote.

Goss.ie has contacted Rosanna for comment.
