Rory McIlroy admits drug testing needs to be tighter in golf

Rory McIlroy has opened up about drug testing in golf.

The Belfast native is one of Ireland’s top golfers and has won many championships, including the U.S. Open and the PGA Championship.

“I think drug testing in golf is still quite far behind some of the other sports,” he admitted

The 27-year-old revealed that certain drugs like HGH (human growth hormone) can’t be picked up in a simple urine test.

“I think blood testing is something that needs to happen in golf just to make sure that it is a clean sport going forward.

“Physically, obviously, you can get stronger, recover faster,” he admitted on FM104’s 10 – 3 show.

“So, I mean, for example, you can’t really pick [HGH] up in a urine test.

“I could use HGH and get away with it.”

The golfer opened up about his thoughts on the drugs used in sport and further revealed that he doesn’t think that there is any drug that can make someone an overall better player.

“I don’t really know of any drug that can give you an advantage all the way across the board,” he admitted.

“There are obviously drugs that can make you stronger, there are drugs that can help your concentration.

“But whether there’s something out there where it can make you an overall better player, I’m not sure.”
