Ronan Keating got emotional as he discussed his new song The Big Goodbye on BBC’s The One Show.

The new song, which features Robbie Williams, is being released as a tribute to his Boyzone bandmate Stephen Gately – who died suddenly back in 2009.

Ronan revealed that Robbie wrote the song the week that Stephen passed away in October 2009, and he sent him a version of the song last October.

“I remember standing in the kitchen, listening to this song with tears streaming down my face,” he told BBC’s The One Show.

“I said Bobs we gotta do something, we gotta do something man on this track, he said let’s do it and we went into the studio and created this song called The Big Goodbye.”

“It gets me every time. I can hear it there now, unbelievable,” he said.

The 43-year-old admitted that although the process of recording the song was hard, it was “so special” to have.

“It’s amazing though to have it, and so special, and to get to sing with Rob which I’ve always wanted to do [was great].”

Speaking on Goss.ie’s chat show Goss Chats recently, Ronan spoke more about how the song came to be.

“It was Stephen’s 10th anniversary, and the boys and I were doing a TV show in London. Robbie saw the show and he emailed me that night,” he explained.

“He said ‘hey Ro, I have this song I wrote and I wrote it the week Stephen died.’ And I’m standing in my kitchen, listening to this song with tears running down my face.”

“I said ‘let’s do something together on it it would be lovely’. And then we worked on this record, it’s a very special song.”

Ronan’s brand new album Twenty Twenty is out now, which also features duets with Shania Twain and Ed Sheeran.
