And the 24-year-old said his legendary RTE presenter dad – who died in 2010 aged 53 – gave him the love of the stage that stays to today.

Influence: Gerry pushed Rex towards the stage

“It’s inescapable, just because he was my dad. It seems to be ‘in us’ in a way I can’t really explain.

“It’s something inside us, there is like an itch. If I’d be watching a play or film there’s an itch – I want to be up doing that.”

Talented Rex plays a massive 27 characters in the show, which follows the journey of an Irishman across North America.

“I am bricking it, I suppose it’s just me trying to not make it a big deal in my head. It’s just my way of coping,” he told Ireland AM. “There is just loads of loads of reading the script.”

He is looking for identity following the 9/11 attacks in the black comedy.

His new play opens on September 11 at the Smock Alley Theatre.
