Republic of Telly host calls for show reboot

Kevin McGahern has called for the return of Republic of Telly.

The much-loved RTE show was axed in 2017, after 15 seasons.

It helped the careers of the Rubberbandits and Hardy Bucks, as well as giving a platform to presenters like Jennifer Zamparelli and Dermot Whelan.

Kevin, who was the most recent presenter of the show said fans want the show back – and so does he.

“There was a hashtag trending recently called #WhatWeWantRTE and audiences are screaming out for comedy,” he told the Sun.

“Two in every three suggestions were comedy or a panel show, something simple

“When The Panel was on, you have no idea how beneficial that was to comedians. We’re now stuck on our own and we’re relying entirely on the internet.

“We need something like The Panel because it’s a good showcase, every country should have a comedic showcase.

Speaking about Republic of Telly, Kevin said he would love a return, but with a slightly different objective:

“People were looking for it to come back online recently. I loved working on the show. I did find it difficult to just come up with stuff about Irish telly all the time, though. I’d like a similar format, maybe more political or more open.”

Listen to the latest episode of The Gosscast, where we have decided to switch things around – and interview our very own Goss Boss, Ali Ryan.

This week we celebrated 5 years in business, and to commemorate the achievement Goss.ie Editor Kendra Becker sat down with Ali to talk about everything from her childhood, to chasing her dreams, to the low points in business.
