Ray D’Arcy faces €100k pay cut after losing prime Saturday night TV slot

Ray D’Arcy is reported to take a substantial pay cut in the new year.

The cuts come as a result of his Saturday night show being slashed in three, according to The Mail on Sunday.

The presenter, who was RTÉ’s second highest earner with €450,000 according to recent figures, is set to lose €100,000 thanks to the new 2020 schedule.

Ray’s primetime Saturday night TV slot is due to be divided in three, with new content filling the gaps.

Comedian Tommy Tiernan is set to replace the radio star in the new year.

Tommy’s new chat show is due to run from January until mid-March.

“RTÉ is going to have to pay Tommy and the other new host and you’d have to think that money will come directly from D’Arcy’s current budget,” a celebrity agent told the newspaper.

Ray has previously been open about taking a pay cut.

Speaking with The Independent’s Eddie Rowley, Ray was asked if there was pressure for him to take a wage reduction.

“I see the reality of the media landscape. And it’s very difficult for RTE” he said.

“We live in a small country. We’re judged and compared to one of the best broadcasting companies in the world (the BBC), who have a population of over 60 million people and all the resources and licence fees that go with that.”

“Then you add to that Netflix, Amazon Prime, Instagram.”

Referencing his comments, the agent told the Mail On Sunday:

“Mr D’Arcy already volunteered in September that he would opt for a pay cut because of the well-flagged financial problems at RTÉ; however, it’s not clear that he envisaged his schedule being butchered to bring in fresh talent in his place.”
