Paul Mescal has scooped an Emmy nomination for his role as Connell Waldron in the TV adaptation of Sally Rooney’s Normal People.

The 24-year-old was nominated in the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series or Movie category – and will go up against Hugh Jackman, Mark Ruffalo, Jeremy Irons, and Jeremy Pope.

The Emmy nominees were announced live in the US this afternoon, and Normal People landed four nominations in total.

On top of Paul’s nomination, Lenny Abrahamson has been nominated in the Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series category.

Sally Rooney & Alice Birch have received a nod for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, and Louise Kiely has been nominated in the Outstanding Casting for a Limited Series category.

The executive producers of Normal People, Andrew Lowe and Ed Guiney, said in a statement: “Congratulations from all of us at Element to Paul, Lenny, Sally, Alice and Louise for their Emmy nominations.”

“The response to the show internationally has exceeded our wildest dreams and this is an incredible honour for the show and for everyone who worked on it.”

Irish actor Andrew Scott was also included in the Emmy nominations this afternoon.

His role in Black Mirror has landed him a nomination in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series category.

The winners of this year’s Emmy Awards will be unveiled on September 20 live on ABC in a ceremony hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
