Paul Mescal admits Irish people can be ‘bitter’ when they see others ‘do well’

Paul Mescal has admitted that Irish people can be “bitter” when they see others “do well”.

The Kildare native rose to fame following the success of the Hulu and BBC adaptation of Sally Rooney’s novel Normal People, receiving an Emmy nomination for his portrayal of Connell Waldron.

The actor spoke with Doireann Garrihy on her The Laughs Of Your Life podcast, where he admitted there was “negative connotations” to how Irish people react to other’s success.

“I love being Irish and Irish people, but I think sometimes there can be a little bit of – and I haven’t felt this – but there can be a bitterness,” he shared.

“We like to see them do well, but when they get past a certain point they automatically become egotistical and above themselves.

“My friends from school and home – I treat them and they treat me the same way as we did before any of this,” he added.

“We probably don’t get to communicate as often as we did before, but I think that’s just the nature of the game at the moment – until I get to grips with what my life is for the next while.”

“That’s kind of a statement that I’m allergic to – ‘Won’t you remember us now when [you get famous]?’ And to be fair, I haven’t heard that from people I genuinely consider friends.

“I have a really positive experience in that sense, from people reaching out who would’ve been messaging me the week before about something else and then the show came out. It’s a continuation rather than a drop in.

“I’m lucky in that sense because it’s not always the case,” he admitted.

On this week’s episode of Goss Chats, Goss.ie CEO Ali Ryan chats with award-winning makeup artist and MRS Glam creator, Michelle Regazolli Stone.

The celebrity MUA opens up about the ups and downs of living through the pandemic, and how her makeup range saved her.

#GossChats is sponsored by top Irish aesthetic clinic Haus of JeJuve.
