Muireann O’Connell tells trolls to ‘grow up’ after facing criticism for her job

Muireann O’Connell has told trolls to “grow up”, after facing online criticism for her job.

The presenter took to Twitter this morning to respond to recent insults she has received “because of the job” she does – which sees her host The Six O’Clock Show.

“I have been called a lot of names in my time on twitter. Grand,” she wrote, “Recently people have been going at me because of the job that I do.”

She continued: “I love my job. I’m proud of it. Insulting me because I read an autocue… grow up. People are not their jobs. We are a multitude.”

Fans of the presenter showed their support for her following the tweet, with one blaming “total and utter jealousy” for the insults Muireann has received.

“Well said Muireann, don’t let jealous people get you down, you are great at what you do,” another Twitter user wrote.

Muireann recently admitted losing her job at Today FM made her nervous about taking time off work on the Six O’Clock Show.

On her Instagram Story, Muireann explained: “I’m just finished work and I’m officially on holidays.”

“I haven’t taken a holiday since last year because I took a holiday last year and then shortly afterwards I was gotten rid of from a job.”

“So psychologically I link the two and I know it’s probably deranged and weird to think that way and I definitely need to see a therapist about it…But unfortunately it is how my brain is so I’m freaking out a little bit.”

Muireann added: “But I’m trying not to and I’m just going to try and enjoy a week of not working, everything’s going to be fine, it’s fine.”

Muireann was axed from Today FM last July, and replaced by Mairead Ronan.

She now hosts The Six O’Clock Show on Virgin Media full-time, and she also fronted an entertainment programme called The Late Tackle with Greg O’Shea earlier this year.
