Miriam O’Callaghan to sue Facebook for defamation

Miriam O’Callaghan is set to sue Facebook for defamation, after false claims and advertisements were shared on the social media platform.

The RTÉ presenter was targeted in a fake advert that claimed she created a new “anti-aging skincare” range.

The 59-year-old reportedly called in solicitors last summer to tackle the false advertisements, but is now taking legal action.

The Sunday Times reported that the broadcaster “has been left with no choice” and Miriam even took to Twitter to voice her opinions on the false advertisement and wrote: “Shocked, saddened & deeply frustrated to hear today about the number of women who have bought this so-called face cream of mine – total scam. Makes me more resolute to proceed.”

It has been reported that there were over forty versions of the fake advertisements circulating online and some of Miriam’s fellow RTÉ presenters, such as Claire Byrne and Mary Kennedy, were also falsely quoted to be using the skincare brand.

Some of the adverts reportedly claimed that Miriam was fired from RTÉ for “erratic behaviour” and that she “went off the rails” during a broadcast.

Miriam admitted that when her 12-year-old son saw the advertisement about her being fired, he questioned if it was true, which was the deciding factor in her proceeding to take legal action.
