Michael D Higgins has confirmed that he will seek re-election as the President of Ireland.
The 77-year-old released a statement today “offering himself” to serve the country in the role for a second term.
The statement goes on to say that, “The Government has been informed of this decision.”
“The President’s programme of official duties and engagements continues.”
Many celebrities and public figures have come out to say they would not run in this year’s election if Higgins wished to stay on for a second term in the role.
They believe him to be the most competent candidate for the role.
