Maura Derrane jokes about ‘divorcing’ her ‘TV husband’ Dáithí Ó Sé – after he claimed they’re not friends outside of work

Maura Derrane has threatened to “divorce” her “TV husband” Dáithí Ó Sé, after he claimed they weren’t friends outside of work.

Last week, Dáithí told The RTÉ Guide that he and his Today show co-host didn’t hang out after work, adding: “We’ve never pretended to be best friends.”

Maura revealed she texted Dáithí after reading the article, telling The Irish Sun: “I was actually kind of saying to myself, ‘God I thought we were friends, to be honest.'”

“I knew what he was trying to say was we’re very much together so long and we’re off air but I would consider myself friends with him,” the 51-year-old said.

“I actually texted him asking him, ‘Did we have a row I didn’t remember?’ I was like, ‘Hi there frenemy. What’s the story?’ I was like, ‘What’s the story here? Did we have a falling out or something? What do you mean by all that we’re not friends?'”

“Nonsense. God if we’re not friends after 10 years god help us.”

Maura continued: “I’m just like, ‘Hello! Like do you want a divorce or something Daithi?’ That’s what I will have to ask him on-air, ‘Do you want a divorce? Do you want a show divorce?’ Maybe I need another man in the seat maybe I need to divorce myself.”

“Maybe I need to change him for a younger model. I think I need a new model on the couch definitely. I think I will have to change it up a bit I have to start looking now. I am going to start looking. I have been too silly I haven’t looked at anyone else for 10 years.”

“I haven’t looked at any other potential TV husbands for 10 years now I am going to start looking around,” the presenter joked.

Maura went on to explain that it is nice to have a break from the workspace when they wrap up the show every evening.

She said: “To be honest, when you’re working with someone every day I think it’s good to go to work and really give it 110 per cent but I think when you walk out you just have to decompress and get away from all that and just live your real life with other people.

“It can be the Truman show so you need to step off the stage.”

Following their summer break, the Today show returns to RTÉ One today, Monday, September 27, with Dáithí and Maura.

New presenter Emer O’Neill will also be filling in for Sinead Kennedy, who is on extended maternity leave.
