Maura Derrane becomes a mum after welcoming baby boy early

RTE star Maura Derrane has become a mum for the first time – after welcoming a baby boy early.

The Today show presenter and TD husband John Deasy have named their son Cal, who arrived a few weeks before next month’s due date.

The 43-year-old said: “He was born at 9.45pm last night. He came early so weighed 6lbs, but he is good and healthy. We are calling him Cal.”

Co-host Daithi O’Se was one of the first people to congratulate Maura after the birth.

“I’m just delighted for her, and it’s another boy, with our own now and Claire Byrne had her little fella, and sure we’re just delighted for Maura,” he said.

“I was chatting to Maura this morning and she is in great form. I went to bed early last night and I woke up and saw it on my Twitter feed so I gave her a shout. She is over the moon and she says he looks like John.”

Pregnant: Maura posted this selfie in the run up to the birth

Maura – who announced her pregnancy in January – had kept the sex of the baby a surprise until the birth.

She said people have been “fascinated by anyone over 40 having a child” but that it “feels perfectly normal”.

She added: “I’ve always said I was very happy without children which that was the truth but there is a point at my stage in life, when you’re over 40 – it’s like now or never.”
