Mark Cagney felt like a ‘manic zombie’ following the death of his wife

Top Irish presenter Mark Cagney has opened up about losing his wife Anne.

Ann sadly passed away at the age of 31, after collapsing in Brown Thomas in 1991.

The former Ireland AM presenter revealed that he felt total “despair” following her passing, and “did not want to live.”

Speaking to the Sunday Independent he said: “I’ll tell you what I was. Here’s the thing about despair? What is despair? Despair, not so much that you want to give up and end it all.”

“You don’t want to do anything. You don’t want to get up. I didn’t want to go to sleep. I was like a manic zombie. I didn’t want to have any contact with people.”

“I didn’t want to live, I didn’t want to die. I didn’t know what I wanted to do. And I was going mad.”

The presenter went on to describe how in his grief, he felt his wife’s death was some kind of twisted punishment sent to him from the universe.

“This was my prison sentence, or my purgatory,” he described.

Mark went on to marry Audrey Byrne in September 2002.
