Kodaline frontman Steve Garrigan has opened up about the heartbreaking moment they found out that a young fan had died after one of their gigs.

Back in 2016, 17-year-old Ciara Lawlor was rushed to hospital after collapsing from a pre-existing heart condition at their concert in Marlay Park.

Sadly, the young teen was later pronounced dead, leaving her family, friends, and her favourite band devastated.

Speaking about the moment they found out about Ciara, Steve told the Irish Sun: “We were on cloud nine after playing a sold out gig to 38.000 fans.”

“Then our tour manager came in and said ‘I have some really bad news’ and told us about Ciara. It knocked us straight down to earth.”

The bandmates attended Ciara’s funeral, where they met her family, and paid tribute to her by singing their hit song High Hopes with her school choir.

Steve said: “I mean what do you say in those situations? You don’t say anything.

“You just hug. It’s about just being there, and being supportive and sympathetic. That’s the best thing to do. All you can do is hug.”

Following her death, Kodaline honoured her by recording a song called Angel for Ciara, which they included on their album The Politics of Living.

Steve explained: “We hadn’t wanted to release that song. It was purely a gift to Ciara’s family but they wanted us to put it on our last album.”

“We only recently played it live as a tribute at a gig in St Anne’s Park where her family, cousins and school friends were in the audience.”
