Katherine Lynch recalls police ‘holding a gun to her head’ on ‘horrific’ holiday

Katherine Lynch has revealed she was held at gunpoint by police in Bulgaria back in the 90s.

The Irish comedian was with two friends and her sister at the time, and admitted it was a “horrific” experience.

Speaking on RTÉ’s Today show, Katherine said: “We went to Bulgaria once and it was an absolute disaster, we thought we were going to this really exotic holiday.”

“We thought ‘we’re not going to Benidorm, we’re going to be cool and go to Bulgaria’. Little did we know it was just out of communism at the time, so it was horrific.”

The TV personality explained: “We arrived to this cheap hotel because we were on a budget, and on the first night the sniffer dogs raided the hotel… it was like a scene from Goodfellas.”

Unfortunately, things took a turn for the worst when they got into a taxi with a drunk driver.

“We got into a taxi, the taxi driver was as drunk as a lord with a bottle of whiskey, which was only a pound so it was cheaper than water,” she said.

“So he was drinking that and he went up on two wheels on a stump and nearly killed us. My friend knocked his glasses off and we jumped out of the car and ran but he followed us in the car.”

“We got to the hotel and the guards arrived and they put a gun to my head and I had to give 50 dollars or I would have been deported,” she revealed.

Despite it being a “horrific” experience, Katherine looks back and laughs at the situation now.

“It was the most valuable holiday of all holidays because every time we have a dinner party we talk about Bulgaria,” she laughed.
