Jedward reveal the past year has been ‘very hard’ following the death of their mother

The twins have spoken about the loss in a rare interview

Irish twins Jedward have opened up about the death of their mother.

The pop duo, otherwise known as John and Edward Grimes, lost their beloved mother Susanna last year – after a long battle with cancer.

Speaking to Ray D’Arcy on RTÉ Radio 1, marking their first radio interview in years, the brothers said: “Last year was a very hard year personally with our mum passing and this year we recorded an album, we put it out to keep everything going for our fans.”

“I think our mom, she always had our backs, she always knew what we were comfortable doing and she looked out for us like all Irish moms.”

“It was hard, it was hard. That was last year so it’s been over a year now and yeah, it was very hard.”

“I think you just feel lost because you’re kind of disconnected. It feels like ‘right I’m a grownup now, I’m on my own now’.”

John and Edward also explained why they decided not to publicise the fact that their mother was sick.

“I think our mom did know [that she was dying] because it was going on a number of years, and we never decided to tell anyone publicly because we didn’t want people to see it as a weakness on or mom’s behalf.”

“Because a lot of people would take advantage of the situation knowing she didn’t have the strength to keep up.

“We always kept hope. We were always very close to our mom,” they said.

The twins also revealed that they were by their mother’s side when she passed away, and they played her favourite Fleetwood Mac songs in hospital.

“It was very hard. You feel this rush of emotions come over you, it comes over you in like a wave,” they explained.

“Even now talking about it, I can go there. Even when you’re by yourself or you’re sitting watching a movie or you’re just there and you’re with your thoughts and you can just be like, ‘wow she’s not here anymore’.”
