Updated: Jedward rescued by Coast Guard helicopter – after being stranded at sea

Pop twins Jedward had to be rescued by a Coast Guard helicopter yesterday after being stranded at sea – with fears they could potentially drown.

The Eurovision stars become at risk of being swept away to sea after being caught on a sandbank in darkness for hours late at night.

They were forced to call their mother Susanna, who is also their manager, from the Malahide, Dublin location.

The former X Factor favourites – known for their track Waterline – were then saved by a rescue chopper and a ten men team specially sent to grab them and a younger relative.

Susanna told the Irish Sun: “It was terrifying for the boys. They ended up on shifting sands completely surrounded by water.

“This could have been a terrible tragedy but for the Coast Guard finding them. The boys were getting more and more desperate as the water was coming in.

Lucky: Jedward came close to death

“Thank God the Coast Guard sent the helicopter up and it found them trapped on sands near Malahide. They got to the boys about 1am. I was beside myself and John and Edward were very badly shaken.”

And John admitted it could have “been a tragedy” if the Coast Guard hadn’t stepped in.

“What we want to get across is how quickly this all happened. This got out of hand before we even realised,” he said.

“We would urge young people to be very careful around water and the sea. This could have been a tragedy but for the good work of the Coast Guard.”

A Coast Guard spokesman said: “We got the Skerries Coast Guard unit out, and we tasked the rescue helicopter.

“The helicopter reported just before midnight he could see the three but there was no immediate danger. At 12:08 the Skerries Coast Guard unit got with them, and said they were safe and well.”
