Irish stars fail to nab a Golden Globe – as La La Land comes out on top

Irish stars including Ruth Negga and the cast of Sing Street failed to nab a Golden Globe on Sunday night, as new film La La Land was the talk of the evening.

The movie took home seven awards during the ceremony, winning every category it was nominated in, including Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

The film’s stars Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling each took home top honours in the Best Actor and Best Actress in a Musical or Comedy categories.

Damien Chazelle took home Best Director and Best Screenplay, while Justin Hurwitz won Best Original Score and Best Original Song for City of Stars.

The Night Manager was also a big hit, scooping Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Miniseries or Television Film for Tom Hiddleston, Hugh Laurie and Olivia Colman respectively.

Moonlight got a big cheer from the audience when it was named Best Motion Picture – Drama, while Casey Affleck won Best Actor in a Drama Series for Manchester By The Sea.

Surprise: Isabelle Huppert won Best Actress in a Drama Series for French film Elle | NBC

And there was a surprise win in the Best Actress in a Drama category when Isabelle Huppert beat out the likes of Amy Adams, Natalie Portman, Jessica Chastain and Ruth Negga for French movie Elle (which also won Best Foreign Language Film).

Meanwhile Viola Davis won Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for Fences, Aaron Taylor-Johnson took home Best Supporting Actor for Nocturnal Animals and Zootopia was named Best Animated Motion Picture.

Elsewhere The Crown scooped awards for Best Drama Series and Best Actress in a Drama Series (for Claire Foy), while Billy Bob Thornton won Best Actor in a Drama Series for Goliath.

In the equivalent comedy categories, Atlanta scored awards for Best Comedy Series and Best Actor for Donald Glover, and Tracee Ellis Ross won Best Actress for Blackish.

While The Night Manager proved popular when it came to the Miniseries awards, American Crime Story: The People vs. OJ Simpson won Best Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television and Sarah Paulson won Best Actress in that category for her portrayal of Marcia Clark.

The Golden Globe Awards are given out by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
