The people of Ireland have once again expressed their fury, after Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott were both claimed as British on Tuesday – following their Emmy nominations.

Paul, who hails from Kildare, has been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series for his role as Connell Waldron in Normal People.

Meanwhile, Dublin native Andrew has been nominated in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series category, for his role in Black Mirror.

After a number of media outlets branded both stars as ‘British’ on Tuesday, many took to Twitter to remind everyone that Paul and Andrew are from Ireland.

Normal People received four Emmy nominations in total yesterday.

On top of Paul’s nomination, Lenny Abrahamson has been nominated in the Outstanding Directing for a Limited Series category.

Sally Rooney & Alice Birch have also received a nod for Outstanding Writing for a Limited Series, and Louise Kiely has been nominated in the Outstanding Casting for a Limited Series category.

Reacting to his first Emmy nomination on Tuesday night, Paul wrote on Instagram: “Thank you to absolutely everyone @element_pictures, @hulu and @bbcthree! Lenny I will forever be indebted to you ❤️.”

Paul also gave a shout out to his co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones, who missed out on an Emmy nomination.

He added: “@daisyedgarjones this only exists because of you and extraordinary talent end of! Thank you for all your beautiful messages I’m gonna go away and cry now x.”

The winners of this year’s Emmy Awards will be unveiled on September 20 live on ABC in a ceremony hosted by Jimmy Kimmel.
