The people of Ireland have once again expressed their fury, after Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott were both claimed as British on Tuesday – following their Emmy nominations.
Paul, who hails from Kildare, has been nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Series for his role as Connell Waldron in Normal People.
Meanwhile, Dublin native Andrew has been nominated in the Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series category, for his role in Black Mirror.
After a number of media outlets branded both stars as ‘British’ on Tuesday, many took to Twitter to remind everyone that Paul and Andrew are from Ireland.
Why is the Guardian calling Irish talent British?
I’m not angry, just confused at the poor journalism.
Would they call an Italian actor British?
Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott are Irish, from, like, IRELAND.

Hey @guardian you do realise Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott are Irish?? This is getting beyond annoying or funny now, the constant claiming of Irish people as British. pic.twitter.com/OPAL9FVZ8Y

Inevitable.@mescal_paul claimed as British by the Mail and Guardian.
Irish show, Irish writers, Irish star. Same old British media glory-grabbing. pic.twitter.com/zhK4jsiEUA

friendly (slightly passive aggressive) reminder that Paul Mescal and Andrew Scott are IRISH not British so please stop classing them as such. you can’t pick and choose us as you like, we are not yours to claim when we achieve something worthy of celebrating

They’re not British actors. Paul Mescal & Andrew Scott are Irish. There is no similarity, there is no comparison. Irish is Irish. British is British pic.twitter.com/N7vZBEbDKT

Paul also gave a shout out to his co-star Daisy Edgar-Jones, who missed out on an Emmy nomination.
He added: “@daisyedgarjones this only exists because of you and extraordinary talent end of! Thank you for all your beautiful messages I’m gonna go away and cry now x.”
