Irish Instagram star Rachel Gorry recalls the devastating moment she told her daughter her dad was dying

"I think it was the worst moment of my life..."

Rachel Gorry has recalled the devastating moment she told her daughter that her father was dying.

The Instagram star’s husband of eight years, Daniel, was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in September 2018 – and sadly lost his battle on April 1, at the age of 29.

Speaking to Ray D’Arcy on his RTÉ Radio 1 show, Rachel explained that Daniel was diagnosed with cancer after he fell ill on a trip to Portugal.

“Two days into the holiday he was just in agony and we rushed him to the hospital,” she said.

“He was internally bleeding and it was really bad that he could have died, so they had to give him two blood transfusions.”

Doctors ended up finding a massive tumour, and Daniel was told that he might have cancer.

When they returned to Dublin, it was confirmed that the father-of-three did have cancer, and they later found out that it was terminal.

Rachel proceeded to reveal how she told their eldest daughter Leah about her father’s terminal illness, and said it was “the worst moment” of her life.

“Basically we were always honest with Leah at the start, we knew we had a little bit of time when the doctor told us we have up to five years,” she said.

“So we just said to her, ‘Daddy is really sick and the doctors are going to try really hard to make him better but they might be able to.'”

Rachel explained: “Then when we knew he was getting bad we had to sit Leah down and say, ‘The medicine they’re giving daddy isn’t working and that daddy is going to die,’ and I think it was the worst moment of my life.”

The mother-of-three broke down in tears on the radio show, as she described her daughter’s reaction to the harrowing news.

“She just roared, she didn’t even cry she just screamed, I’d never heard it before and we were all very upset and Daniel slept with her that night and she clung to him,” she said.

“She wouldn’t let him go. But she’s doing brilliantly now.”

Rachel started her interiors page on Instagram back in January, and her following increased as she started documenting Daniel’s battle with Stage 4 cancer.

Daniel had encouraged her to start the page, so she would have something to focus on while his condition deteriorated.
