Irish hospitals thank Conor McGregor for generous donations towards vital equipment

Conor McGregor has been praised for his generous donations to Irish hospitals.

The UFC champion donated over €1 million worth of medical equipment to healthcare workers last year amid the pandemic, and he has also made monetary donations to hospitals across the country.

Ahead of his rematch against Dustin Poirier on January 24, the Notorious was thanked by frontline workers for his “incredible support” during a difficult year.

Speaking to BT Sports, CEO of the Mater Foundation Mary Moorhead said: “Thanks to Conor’s incredible support we were able to equip a respiratory ward in the Mater Hospital.”

“As you can imagine with post-Covid patients, a lot of the symptoms that are showing at the moment are respiratory-based,” she explained.

“So this has been such a vital source for our hospital staff and also for our patients.

“It was the biggest surprise the Mater Hospital got. He arrived in and directly delivered the PPE to our porters in the hospital itself.

“I think they’re still talking about it. Sometimes it’s difficult to realise it was a very dark time for staff as well as patients. But to have somebody like Conor come in and show his support that way will always be remembered.”

St James’s Hospital CEO Fiachra O’Riordan said: “Conor’s donation went to buy patient monitors which were dispersed right across the hospital departments.

“It appeared that Conor wanted to give and wanted to give back to the Irish people through the hospital system.

“It was very welcome for us, not just St James’, but other hospitals to receive this philanthropic donation,” he added.
