Irish fans to get medal for ‘exemplary sportsmanship’ at the Euros

Irish fans from Euro 2016 are to be honoured with a medal from the Mayor of Paris for their “exemplary sportsmanship”.

Mayor Anne Hidalgo contacted President Michael D Higgins to pay tribute to our Green Army for their phenomenal behaviour throughout the tournament.

While violence occurred amongst other country’s supporters, namely between Russian and English fans, Irish fans have received nothing but praise as videos have gone viral of the supporters cleaning up after themselves on French streets – and just generally being great craic.

According to French newspaper L’Equipe, The Mayor of Paris wants to honour Irish supporters by awarding the Medal of the City of Paris “for their exemplary sportsmanship”.

The medal, known as the Grand Vermeil, is one of the Paris’ most prestigious honours, with previous winners including Rafael Nadal and Herbie Hancock.
