Irish designer Paul Costelloe: ‘Kate Middleton isn’t as exciting as Princess Diana’

Paul Costello has hit out at Kate Middleton’s recent Vogue Cover.

The Duchess of Cambridge has been compared to her husband’s late mother, Princess Diana, since she became a part of the royal family – and even still, nothing has changed.

“I was very disappointed with Kate’s Vogue cover. It wasn’t like Princess Diana at all,” the Irish designer said.

The Dubliner worked alongside the late princess as her personal designer from 1982 up to 1997, the same year she passed away.

“She’s still stunning, but they could have done a lot more for the cover,” he told the Irish Independent.

“Kate’s not as individual as Princess Diana. She’s not offering the excitement, unexpectedness and vulnerability that Princess Diana did.”

Paul also commented on Kate’s upbringing and how it differed from Diana’s – and said that the 34-year-old’s mother had a huge impact on how she presents herself.

“She’s her mother’s daughter, and it’s clear her mother plays a very important role in her life, which is good,” he admitted.

“Kate has a very different background to Princess Diana. Diana’s mother was an aristocrat while Kate’s was an air hostess. She’s very obedient.”

Meanwhile, the 71-year-old revealed that he would love to work with the mother-of-two, as she’s previously shown love for Irish designer Orla Kiely.

“It would be amazing if she could wear my collection, although she has worn Orla Kiely and we should be very proud of her,” he added.
