Last month, Ryan Tubridy launched the Toy Show Appeal, which raised €6.5 million for children’s charities across Ireland, which will be distributed in 2021.

The RTÉ presenter praised the generosity of the Irish people on his Radio One show on Monday, after a further €1.5million was raised for the Simon Community on Friday night’s Late Late Show.

“I don’t know where you get it from… I think Irish people have this innate sense of helping people who are just out of luck,” he said.

“But I did want to say thank you… To you, the Irish people, to those who call Ireland home, thank you. In the middle of the darkness, in the middle of the madness, to consistently and always come good is just remarkable.”
