Interview: Eoghan McDermott hopes Dolores O'Riordan bounces back from air rage arrest – as she's an 'awesome person'

The Voice host Eoghan McDermott has said he hopes that Dolores O’Riordan bounces back from her air rage arrest.

The RTE presenter hopes that the Cranberries singer – who he worked with last year on The Voice – gets help and “wishes her well”.

She was arrested in Shannon Airport after stamping on the foot of a flight attendant before allegedly headbutted one of the Gardai who was sent to the scene, and spat in his face.

But Eoghan told Goss.ie he will “always stick up for her because she is an amazing person” – and believes she didn’t deliberately injure the air hostess on the flight back from New York.

“I think she is amazing. This morning I heard a reporter on who said an eyewitness said she didn’t deliberately stamp on the foot that she was jumping like going a bit mad,” he said.

“It was collateral damage so that was some reporter that spoke to an eyewitness. Wait till it all falls out. And obviously she was taken into hospital so you just wish her well you know that she’s okay.

“At the same time it’s s**t for the air hostess to have her foot stamped on. I think Dolores is amazing and I will always stick up for her she’s an awesome person.”

Speaking at the launch of Erin’s new Dine-Ins range, Eoghan admits he doesn’t know whether the incident was sparked by being in such a confined space.

“I remember she told us on the show that she moved into a pretty desolate part of Canada just because she liked solitude a bit,” he said.

“I don’t know if she gets angsty around people or confined spaces so obviously they felt she needed to go to hospital.”

The 2FM presenter, 31, also told Goss.ie the very first time he met the 43-year-old was an extremely bizarre encounter.

“Literally the first time I met her she was chatting to Bressie and I walked in the room and she was like ‘Lads let’s go, let’s touch a tree,'” he said.

“She made us go outside and touch a tree just because she wants to be connected with the earth.”
