Imelda May on McGregor fight: ‘Leonardo DiCaprio thought I was just some mental woman’

Imelda May sung the national anthem over in Las Vegas for the McGregor vs. Mayweather fight.

The singer revealed that she was sitting beside Leonardo DiCaprio, and she thinks she made some impression on him.

“Leonardo DiCaprio was beside me and I think he thought I was just some mental woman. I was really going for it.

“I was screaming, I was shouting, I was calling Mayweather every name under the sun.”

Speaking about her performance on RTE Radio One’s Ray D’Arcy, the Dublin woman said she spent the entire flight over practising.

“I was nervous that I’d get it wrong. That was my main thing, I thought ‘I don’t want to get it wrong because I’ll be hung drawn and quartered’.

“So I sat like a madwoman – I looked like the most patriotic flyer ever. I sat on the plane singing our national anthem, Amhrán Na bhFiann, for eleven hours straight.”

“I only half knew it. I didn’t know it enough certainly to sing it on international television.”
