“My commitment towards trying to help organisations all around the country, that probably puts a natural strain on things because I’m gone a lot.

Adding frankly: “That’s something I probably need to have a look at”.

“I do find it hard to step back. It’s something I like doing because I feel it’s something that’s important in life,” he admitted.

Passionate about helping others, Gerard explained it’s not about money but lending a helping hand to worthwhile causes that matters.

“I spent last Saturday peeling potatoes in Cork for meals for homeless people.

“It’s not just about money, which I’ve always given, although it’s less now because I don’t have it as much as in the Celtic Tiger days,” he told the Sunday Mirror.

“But by working as well, I think it’s very important and I was delighted to be able to help last Saturday. I do spend a bit of time but that’s sorted out now.”

“Lisa is very good with charity, she’ll come with me when she can,” he added.

Speaking about the couples most recent split, he said: “I think we both always believe it’s for good. There’s never a clean break as such.

“We don’t argue. There’s so much on the agenda that sometimes a break is inevitable. We’re always talking anyway and we always get on very well,” he said frankly.

“It wasn’t a case of having a big argument and not talking. But sometimes a little space does no harm either. So we’re fighting fit and in great form.”

Goss.ie exclusively revealed the couple were still engaged last month with the pair admitting: “We’re definitely getting married, we haven’t set a date yet.”
