Gay Byrne set to return to the airwaves after revealing battle with cancer

Gay Byrne is set to return to work at RTÉ’s Lyric FM, after revealing his battle with prostate cancer.

The broadcaster revealed his cancer diagnosis last November, and has been taking a break from the airwaves since January 2017.

As well as that, the 83-year-old has also been recovering from a double hip replacement – which has resulted in him taking up to 12 tablets a day.

However, Gay is said to be recovering well after receiving treatment for cancer, and he’s revealed that he will return to work in just two months time.

“The situation is, up until now I wasn’t sure if I was up to it or not. But I can confirm I’m going back on the radio this October, and we will see how it goes,” he told the Irish Sun.

Although Gay is looking forward to getting back to his Sunday radio show, his wife Kathleen has her doubts.

“Kathleen was very much against it because she doesn’t want me to take on anything which is stressful or a strain.

“But my radio show is not a stress or strain programme, it’s a little Mickey Mouse radio programme on Sunday afternoon and some people seem to enjoy it and that’s what we are doing,” he explained.
