Irish actor Joe Rooney married “the love of his life” this week.
Best known for playing Fr Damo in Father Ted, the comedian exchanged vows with his fiancée Nerea on Tuesday – almost one year after he popped the question.
Sharing photos from their big day on Instagram, Joe wrote: “I got married today to the beautiful, wonderful @nerea.inked It’s been an incredible journey, meeting, falling love with and marrying the love of my life.”
“She is such a genuinely kind soul. I’m so grateful she took a chance on me. I’m proud to call her my wife. #married.”
Joe struck up a romance with Nerea, who hails from Madrid, during the pandemic.
Speaking to the Irish Sun last year, he said: “Nerea is from Madrid and her family lives there. She lived in the UK for ten years and we met online.”
“I recorded a bit of Hurt by Johnny Cash, well it’s not a Johnny Cash song but he did a version of it, and she liked it. I was like ‘thanks’ and then we followed each other.
“We were messaging first, then talking on the phone for ages and eventually FaceTimed.”
They later met for the first time when Joe invited her to one of his gigs in the UK.
After navigating a long distance relationship for a few months, Nerea eventually relocated to Ireland, and the pair moved in together.
In 2023, the actor proposed to Nerea during a romantic trip to Santorini in Greece.
